Who can get it
You may get help if:
- you're 16 or over (if you're 16-19 and have a Youth Service provider, contact Youth Services)
- you're a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
- you normally live in New Zealand and intend to stay here
- you have an immediate or essential need
- you need the car for you, your partner or children
- you need the car because of either:
- a health condition
- lack of access to public transport
- you or your partner own the car, ie, you bought the car or were gifted it.
It also depends on:
- how much you and your partner earn
- any money or assets you and your partner have.
Current income limits
|If you are:
|Weekly income before tax is less than
|Single and 16 to 17 years old
|Single and 18 years old or over
|Couple (with or without children)
|Sole parent with 1 child
|Sole parent with 2 or more children
These don't include what you need for day-to-day living, e.g. your home, car, and some payments after a severe weather event. They do include things like money in the bank, or a second property.

What you can get
Generally we can pay up to $400 to help with some car repairs.
We don't usually pay for standard car costs, eg:
- warrant of fitness
- car insurance
- car registration
- regular servicing costs.
