Leaving emergency housing
What to do when you leave emergency housing and what happens if you don't check out of your accommodation.
What to do when you leave
At the end of your stay, you must:
- check out of your accommodation with the manager or staff. Remember to return your room key or key card.
- do the room check with them. Then you can discuss any damage or missing property as part of checking out.
- take all personal belongings with you. This includes appliances or furniture you may have bought during your stay.
If you're leaving earlier then expected, you also need to let us know.
If there's damage or missing property
If there's damage or missing property, and you agree that you are responsible, we'll use the security deposit to cover any outstanding costs.
You’ll have to pay this back to us, and we’ll send you a letter to let you know if this happens.
If you don't agree that you're responsible, you'll need to talk to the supplier to resolve it. If you can't resolve it, the supplier will follow their own process. This may involve taking you to the Disputes Tribunal.
Amount of damage or missing property is more than security deposit
If the amount of damage or missing property is more than the security deposit, the supplier can ask you to pay back the extra amount. They may take you to the Disputes Tribunal.
What happens if you don't check out
If you leave without checking out, the supplier might say that other people can’t stay in your room until:
- your belongings are removed, or
- any damage is repaired.
If this is the case, we'll generally use the security deposit to cover this loss when:
- the damage or loss was caused while you were staying in the room
- the provider has confirmed you didn’t complete the check-out process, and
- you are not disputing the facts the supplier has provided.
You’ll have to pay this back to us, and we’ll send you a letter to let you know if this happens.
When the supplier will follow up with you
The supplier will follow up with you directly if there's anything:
- which can’t be covered by the security deposit, or
- that's more than the security deposit.
This may involve taking you to the Disputes Tribunal.
