How much you can get for NZ Super

New Zealand Superannuation (NZ Super) is paid fortnightly on a Tuesday. How much you get depends on your situation and what tax code you use.

Payment rates may be different if:

  • you live overseas, or
  • your partner is included in your payment.

You live overseas

Your partner is included in your payment

If you get an overseas pension, this could affect your NZ Super payments. Talk to us about how this could affect your payments.

If you or your partner get other income as well as NZ Super, it may change the tax code you use. This means you could get less for your NZ Super payments, it depends what tax code you're on.

Increases to NZ Super

NZ Super rates increase every year on 1 April to adjust to changes in the average wage. Any information about this increase, or any other changes to our payment rates, will always be communicated here on the Work and Income website.

Your tax code

NZ Super is a taxable payment. The amount of tax you pay depends on the tax code you use.

If you only get NZ Super, your tax code will probably be 'M'. If you get other income as well, it may be a different tax code.

If you need help working out what tax code you should use, go to the Inland Revenue website to look at what tax code you should use.

If you've changed your tax code, you need to let us know. You can do this by filling out our 'Change tax code' form online.
