Changing your tax code for NZ Super and Veteran's Pension

Tell us straight away if you need to change your tax code, eg, if you stop working, so we can pay you the right amount of NZ Super or Veteran's Pension.

If you don't know what tax code you should be on, go to Inland Revenue's website.

How to tell us

You need to complete the 'Change tax code' form.

What you'll need

You'll need the following information to complete the form:

  • client number
  • name
  • IRD number
  • current tax code
  • new tax code.

What happens next

We'll change your tax code and send you a letter to let you know how it affects your payments.

Tailored tax code

If you have a tailored tax code, you need to renew it with Inland Revenue at the end of each financial year. If you don't renew your tailored tax code, you need to change it to a standard tax code and let us know.

If you don't renew or change your tailored tax code before the end of the financial year, your tax rate will default to 45% on 1 April.

    If you use myIR

    When it's time to renew your tailored tax code, Inland Revenue will send you a letter through myIR, and you'll be able to complete the form online.

    Inland Revenue will let us know what your tax code is.

    If you don't use myIR

    When it's time to renew your tailored tax code, Inland Revenue will send you a renewal form. You need to fill it out and send it back to them.

    To change your tailored tax code to a standard tax code, you need to complete the 'Change tax code' form.
