Pay debt in New Zealand

There are several ways you can repay your debt to us if you live in New Zealand.

Online by credit or debit card

You can pay online using your Visa credit or debit card, or MasterCard. Have ready:

  • your name and client number
  • Visa or MasterCard details:
    • name of the person on the card
    • card number
    • expiry date
    • card verification number
  • the amount you'd like to pay.
  • Internet or telephone banking

    You can make a one-off payment or regular automatic payments using internet or telephone banking. Your bank may charge you for these services.

    To set up the payments you'll need the Work and Income Debtors Account number: 03-0049-0006243-025

    In the reference field, you need to put either:

    • if you're paying an emergency housing contribution - the letter 'E' followed by your 9 digit client number, or
    • if you're getting payments from us - the letter 'S' followed by your 9 digit client number, or
    • if you're not getting payments from us - the letter 'D' followed by your 9 digit client number.

    You also need to call our Client Support - Debt Management team on 0800 558 008 or email Client_Support_Debt_Management@msd.govt.nz to let them know:

    • how much you'll be paying
    • how often the payments will be made
    • when the payments will start.
  • Deductions from wages

    If you want to repay your debt by getting an amount deducted from your wages you need to call our Client Support - Debt Management team on 0800 558 008 or email Client_Support_Debt_Management@msd.govt.nz. They will contact your employer to arrange repayments.

  • Automatic payments set up at your bank

    You can set up automatic payments at your bank. They may charge you for this service.

    To set up the payments:

      1. download and print the Authority Form for Debt Repayments form
      2. fill in your bank and account details
      3. choose how often the payments will be made
      4. enter the date the payments will start
      5. write your client number after the D in the payee details
      6. take the form to your bank.

    You also need to contact our Client Support - Debt Management team on 0800 558 008 or email Client_Support_Debt_Management@msd.govt.nz to them know:

      1. how much you'll be paying
      2. how often the payments will be made
      3. when the payments will start.
  • Pay at NZ Post

    You can pay by cash or EFTPOS at NZ Post in the following ways:

    • If you have received a letter from the Client Support - Debt Management team with a barcode on it, take it with you to NZ Post so the repayment can be made against your account.
    • Otherwise you can use a manual lodgement slip and write your client number in the 'Account/Reference No' field.

    If you're going to make regular payments at NZ Post, call us on 0800 558 008 or email Client_Support_Debt_Management@msd.govt.nz to arrange a Repayment Card which has your barcode on it.
