Imprisoned or held in custody on remand

If you're imprisoned or held in custody on remand you need to tell us.

How to tell us

You, or someone you've appointed to act on your behalf, need to call us as soon as you can. If you don't, we may pay you too much and you'll have to pay this back.

Phone us

Payments while you're in custody or remand

Your payments from us will stop the day after you enter custody – either sentenced or on remand.

We'll send a letter to your home address and the prison you are being held at to confirm exactly what will happen to your payments and the date the payment will stop.

Still need payments while you're in custody

Your payments may be able to continue while you're in custody. This depends on your costs and circumstances, for example if you have:

  • a partner or dependent children
  • costs you must keep paying, like rent or hire purchase bills for essential items.

If you still need your payments while you're in custody, contact us to talk about this. Your letter from us will tell you how to contact us.

Having someone act on your behalf

While you're in prison or custody, you can appoint an agent to act on your behalf.
