Our services and standards
Find out about our organisation and how we work, including the payments and services we offer.
Who we are
We are Work and Income, an organisation within the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). Our purpose is to support New Zealanders by offering a number of payments and services on behalf of the government.
We can:
- help you financially if you're on a low income or not working
- support you into work, and
- help you with housing.
We also offer services to employers and providers.
How we'll work with you
Our commitment to you is a guide about how we'll work with you. You can read it in 12 different languages, including New Zealand Sign Language, and Easy Read.
We’ll do our best to work with you in any way we can, e.g. if you:
- need an interpreter,
- need us to visit you at home because of mobility problems, or
- would like a meeting room when you meet with us.
You can also nominate someone to act on your behalf in your dealings with us.
Having someone act on your behalf
We also have a privacy notice. This tells you what we do with your personal information. This includes how we collect, use and share it. We will always treat your information with respect and keep it safe to protect your privacy.
We also speak other languages. Read, listen to, or watch a video in NZ Sign Language about how you can speak with us in another language.
Our payments and services

- urgent or unexpected costs, e.g. food or a washing machine
- health and disability-related costs, e.g. prescriptions or dental treatment
- caring for someone, e.g. someone with a disability
- NZ Superannuation for people who are 65 years or older, and
- pensions for ex-service people.
There is also a Community Services Card to help with medical costs and public transport fares.
We have an online Check What You Might Get guide where you can find out how we can help you and your family. You'll need to answer some questions and at the end we'll tell you what payments we think you may be able to get. Then you can apply online for these payments.

Managing your payments
If you get a payment from us, there are things you'll need to do, like tell us about your income or if your situation changes. We have an online service called MyMSD where you can do this.
You may also need to re-apply for some payments after a certain period of time.
