The role must be:
- to undertake work planting, maintaining, harvesting or packing crops
- short-term, up to 6 months
- a role where there are not enough New Zealanders available.

To hire an SSE visa holder, employers must hold an SSE Approval in Principle (AIP).

Before 1 January 2023, employers did not need to hold an SSE Approval in Principle (AIP) to employ an SSE visa holder if they were hiring for a specified role, location and timeframe. If the SSE visa holder submitted their visa application between 4 April and 31 December 2022, the employer could also be a Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE).
