Other payments for seniors
When you turn 65, NZ Superannuation and Veteran's Pension are the main payments you may qualify for. There are also other payments you may be able to get.
You can use our 'Check What You Might Get' tool to find out what payments you may be able to get and how to apply for them.
This includes common payments like:
- Accommodation Supplement - if you need help with your rent, board, or cost of owning your own home
- Disability Allowance - if you have regular, ongoing costs because of a disability
- Temporary Additional Support - if you don't have enough money to cover your essential living costs, and
- Community Services Card - use this card to pay less on health care and public transport.
Residential care (rest home or hospital)
Residential Care Subsidy
If you need long-term residential care in a hospital or rest home, you may be able to get a Residential Care Subsidy.
Residential Care Loan
If you're going into residential care and want to keep your home for a while, you may be able to get a Residential Care Loan.
Disability Allowance
If some of your care is being paid for by a Residential Care Loan or a Residential Support Subsidy, you may also be able to get a Disability Allowance. This will help to help cover costs such as medical fees, prescriptions, etc.
Special Disability Allowance
If you're getting a benefit and your partner is in residential care,or has been in a public hospital for over 13 weeks, you may be able to get a Special Disability Allowance. This can help with the extra costs of your partner being in care.
