There are many organisations that provide free email. The top 3 providers are:

• Google Gmailexternal - requires a mobile/phone number to sign up
• Yahoo mailexternal
• Microsoft Hotmailexternal - requires an alternative email address or a mobile/phone number to sign up

Using email to apply for jobs

Employers may expect CVs and covering letters emailed to them, and they'll usually reply using email as well.

If you're setting up an email address to apply for jobs, here's some tips of what you can do:

• When you create your email account, make sure the address you select for yourself is professional, e.g. joebloggs25@hotmail.com
• Many job sites will you sign up to a mailing list. Then they can email you with updates about the latest jobs on offer.
