Work for You video transcript
This is the transcription of the video called "Work for You"
|PRESENTER 1:||When you aren't working, it can feel like everyone's got a job except you.|
|PRESENTER 2:||Being out of work isn't easy and finding a job can be hard and frustrating but Work and Income can help you turn things around.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||Well, being out of work's never a lot of fun because you don't have any extra money to do the things you want to do.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||When you don't have a job, it's like, there is absolutely nothing to do.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||I need to get a job so I can provide and support my children.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||I was looking for a job for over a year.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||It was pretty hard because I had no training whatsoever.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||My confidence level flopped.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||It kind of gets you down.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||Yes, you are getting money for doing nothing, but it's not rewarding. You don't - you're not earning it.|
|PRESENTER 2:||Find out what you need to do to find a job so things work out for you.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||It feels good to be back being employed.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||I have my independence at the end of each week and I'm getting my paycheck. I feel good.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||It feels good being able to support myself.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||Getting exercise, getting out, hanging out with people. It's good.|
|UNIDENTIFIED SPEAKER:||It's much better than sitting at home on the Dole, that's for sure [laughs].|
|PRESENTER 2:||There are lots of reasons to work, not just the money. It's better for your family and better for your health. But money is important, especially when you can earn a lot more working on the minimum wage than you'd get on a benefit like Job Seeker Support.|
|PRESENTER 1:||You're definitely better off working, but first, you need to find a job.|
|GM EMPLOYER SERVICES:||When it comes to finding people work some people need more support than others. We work with our clients to make sure that they get the right support to get them ready for work or to get them into work. I mean, what's important to us is not one size fits all.|
|WORK BROKER:||We help our clients by spending time with them, getting to know them, and really getting to know what they're looking for in terms of jobs. They give us a picture of what skills they have and experience, then we're able to link them up with the most suitable employer.|
|PRESENTER 1:||We can also help by being your link to the job market. We can tell you what's out there and help you find out about the jobs in your area.|
|PRESENTER 2:||But there are also things that you can do to find a job. Check out the job ads in the newspaper or on job websites like SEEK or Trade Me Jobs. Many companies and organisations also advertise jobs on their own websites.|
|PRESENTER 1:||You can also let other people know you're looking for work. Spread the word around your family and friends or talk to someone who has the kind of job you'd like.|
|PRESENTER 2:||Finding a job does take time and effort but if you miss out on jobs you want, don't give up and keep looking.|
|PRESENTER 1:||Seasonal work comes and goes and sometimes it feels like there's no work out there at all, but there is.|
|GM EMPLOYER SERVICES:||Yeah, seasonal work is good. So for some people it works to their advantage because it gets them back into work. It gets them into the disciplines of getting up and being part of a team. But it is seasonal work. So when it comes to an end it's about the skills that you have gained in the time you have been in that job that can take you on to another job.
But also in seasonal work, there's opportunities with the growers and the employers to get other jobs within that particular industry.
|EMPLOYER:||Going off to pick some apples after getting a referral from Work and Income. 15 years later or so I'm now a labour manager for Apollo Apples and we're always looking for new people to come into our industry and help, whether it be a picker, or a packer or a forklift - or a technician, mechanic, we've got it all. You've just got to be reliable and have a great attitude.|
|WORK BROKER:||It's not about just climbing up an apple tree anymore and picking apples, there's also a lot of other roles that have come in like IT, so there's a lot of roles to make this not just a seasonal job but an all year round job.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||I was on the Unemployment Benefit. Since I've been working here, I've had the chance to do a wide variety of jobs and the opportunity to go on a few different courses. Hopefully want to work my way up the ranks to eventually one day maybe managing one of those sectors at Apollo.|
|EMPLOYER:||We work closely with Work and Income to provide opportunities for New Zealanders in seasonal work. We target people that we think there will be of a great benefit to our business and we move them into more full time roles with training provided and gives them a great future.|
|EMPLOYER:||We're looking for a lot more staff to assist us in delivering this. We have a lot of business sub contracted out at the moment.|
|GM EMPLOYER SERVICES:||So we do a lot of work in the market with the employers and they do want really great staff and what we'll do is we'll bridge the skill gap if that's a requirement, get our clients ready, and we need our clients to show up and say yes, I'm here and I'm here to work.|
|EMPLOYER:||So our requirements are that we have more cabinet areas than we have staff at the moment. There's always a shortage of resources so…
The construction market at the moment is looking very good. Labour wise and resource wise there is a bit of a shortage. For the people that we are looking for to bring on board we want somebody who's energetic, who shows enthusiasm, who shows drive and passion.
|EMPLOYER:||So what I need you to do is just like I am here, measure 130 off the string line. We need a person who is disciplined, that needs to be able to turn up every day because we rely on them. It's a team environment; they need to be team players.|
|EMPLOYER:||They've got to be able to show us a determination to succeed.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||So how'd you enjoy your stay?|
|CUSTOMER:||It was fantastic.|
|EMPLOYER:||For people who are focused, motivated, committed, we provide these people a real opportunity to gain experience in our industry and you then travel, go overseas, go to other parts of the industry. It's just a fantastic starting point.|
|EMPLOYER:||So, Work and Income, their main focus is always around our common goal. So, getting more people into a role that they're going to enjoy, a role that they're going to stay in. We do need people that are going to be on time and be willing to work and willing to learn.|
|PRESENTER:||Employers know what they want so it's important you present yourself in a way that shows them you're what they're looking for.
It's really important to have a good CV; it's the first impression for the employer. A good CV is what's going to get you to the interview stage.
|PRESENTER:||So what makes a good CV? Things like making sure it's up to date and presents your skills in a way that easily shows an employer you're a good fit for their job.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||My caseworker, he told me to bring in a CV. He went over my CV and changed a whole bunch of things.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||Going for an interview you might feel a little bit nervous, but, you know, you've sort of got to back yourself and just throw your hand in there.|
|PRESENTER:||Going for an interview can be a little bit scary and it's natural to be nervous, but there are things that you can do to help boost your confidence and your chances.|
|PRESENTER:||First impressions count so find out about the job and be prepared. Be on time and dress well. If you're looking good, you'll feel good about yourself. And if you're doing an interview over the phone try and relax, speak clearly and take time answering.|
|CLIENT:||Just to make sure my back is straight, keeping eye contact, always smiling, asking questions. If there's something on my mind speak it, don't be ashamed of what you have to say.|
|CLIENT:||The course I did with Work and Income gave me all the tools and things that I needed to give all the correct answers to get in there.|
|CLIENT:||They have numerous of seminars that they do here which helped with our interview skills and all that so I was quite confident going in.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||Got myself a little bit prepared for my interview before I went, made sure my CV was sorted out and basically went in there and sold myself.|
|PRESENTER:||When you get a job it's a good feeling, it's also good to know what you can expect from your employer.
Some kind of contract or employment agreement. Be paid at least the minimum wage. Have some paid holiday and leave.
And be aware, there may also be a trial period for your new job.
There are things Work and Income need you to do before you can get Jobseeker Support. Attend a Work for You seminar, like the one you're at today. Show you're actively looking for work. Have an up to date CV. Do a Jobseeker Profile to help us help you find work.
We'll put together a checklist of things you need to bring along when you apply for financial support: your birth certificate; passport or driver's license; and two other forms of ID - these could be a bank statement or payslip, and one of your IDs must have been issued within the last two years; proof of your bank account details; proof of your earnings from previous employers; your IRD number; details of any partner and children; proof of accommodation costs; such as your tenancy agreement; a letter from your landlord or mortgage; proof of other costs that could apply to your situation.
|GM EMPLOYER SERVICES:||It's great if you land a job straight away, but the reality is that's not always going to happen. So for some of their clients, they need financial support. Jobseeker Support is a temporary benefit. For us, it's about getting our clients ready for work. Our expectation is our clients will take responsibility and along with us, work proactively to get into work.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||I originally studied as a personal trainer and I wasn't really doing anything. That's when I went to SEEK Work and Income. There was like a call centre course. The course gave me all the things that I needed to find a job.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||And you've got to diversify. Like, I'm a mechanic by trade, but you've got to be able to try this and do that. If you just get yourself in there and do it, you can get on with it. It's really good.|
|PRESENTER:||If you get a benefit, there are some things you'll need to do to make sure you continue to get the benefit payments while you're finding work. You'll need to come to any appointments you have with us, and you should always be ready for an interview or to start a job because you never know when an opportunity might present itself.
If you're a parent, your children must go to preschool or school, depending on their age, and they must be registered with a doctor. If your children are under five, they should be up to date with their Well Child or Tamariki Ora health checks. If you have any problems with these things, talk to us about it. We may be able to help.
|PRESENTER:||And don't forget, let us know if you're going overseas, because you may not be able to get benefit payments while you're away.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||Yeah, actually being able to get work and earn money did make me feel better about myself, and also it was good for the boys to see that I was doing [indistinct].|
|CLIENT:||My children were very proud of me. My successes are their successes.|
|CASE MANAGER:||If you can role model a future by working and being in employment, it's much better for the children and for you, because then they see that maybe education and employment is going to be a better future for them and they'll like step up. But you do have to get your children on board, because you need their support.|
|FORMER CLIENT||Well, I'm solo dad. I've got two teenaged boys to support. Often if I'm working late, I'll send the boys a text; Michael, can you get the spuds on, or Connor, can you get the meat out the freezer, or what have you. We're a working unit, so we rely on each other. The boys are rapt I'm working, and I feel a lot better about working, too.|
|PRESENTER:||As a jobseeker, you also need to be work ready. That means being willing and available to work. We might also require you to attend some activities.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||There is an element where you have to pull through and do things for yourself. Work and Income, they're supporting you, and that's what support is: giving you a push in the right direction.|
|PRESENTER:||Going home safely after a day's work is everyone's right. When you're looking for work, many employers will need to you to be drug free. For health and safety reasons, drug tests are common in industries like forestry and transport.
If an employer asks for a drug test, you must take it and pass. If you fail, it may affect your benefit.
|EMPLOYER:||We do not tolerate the use of any alcohol or drugs on any of our sites. Somebody who could be possibly impaired by drugs and alcohol is not only a danger to themselves but a danger to the other people on site. Also, as part of bringing on new employees, we will put them through a drug and medical. If there's any red flags raised at that time before we employ them, then pretty much, the employment process is terminated.|
|EMPLOYER:||We have a drug-free workplace. We don't want people coming to work and hurting themselves or hurting each other or hurting our clients. If you want a future in the construction industry, you have to be drug free.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||It's for a very good reason, because it's dangerous. You're working around dangerous equipment and dangerous places, and it is really important for your colleagues to be able to rely on you as well as you to be able to rely on them. It's very important.|
|PRESENTER:||Our goal is to help you find work. It should be your goal, too.
Jobseeker Support and Sole Parent Support are there to help you until you get work.
|FORMER CLIENT:||Work and Income and Ministry of Social Development do give people lots of opportunities and push them in the right direction.|
|CASE MANAGER:||Every person has the potential to overcome their barriers.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||Yeah, you're going to get a couple of no's, but every no you get, it's closer to a yes.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||I'm glad that I'm in a position where I don't need to be on that benefit any more.|
|WORK BROKER:||To go from that to being able to find work, being able to buy the things that they want and need. Yeah, that's job satisfaction for me.|
|CLIENT:||As a parent, I have a responsibility to be able to provide the best I can for my children.|
|GM EMPLOYER SERVICES:||It is about money, and it's about being able to get the things they need for them and their families and so that they can have a better life.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||The effort you put in is what you get out of it.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||I found out that working hard gets you somewhere.|
|FORMER CLIENT:||I've got like the best job ever, so [laughs].|
|CLIENT:||Talk to your case managers. They are here to help.|
|CASE MANAGER:||If you want a future, my role is to make sure that you can do that with the full backing of Work and Income.|
