Single Women as Parents community house
A non-profit community organisation providing support and practical help to women parenting alone.
They are the only organisation providing a drop-in centre from 9-3pm 4 days a week, to cater for the needs of these women and they offer a much needed and valued service. The majority of their members are raising families on very low incomes so they provide all the resources and activities at no cost. Women become members of SWAP for a variety of reasons The initial contact is often made when a woman is seeking help for a specific problem e.g. benefit entitlements, information relating to custody issues, child support issues, housing needs, parenting information or to seek social interaction.
Many of their members are those in the community who have been dealing with issues such as isolation, abusive relationships, poverty and stress. As the women’s confidence and self esteem is restored, they are offered an opportunity to join their volunteer mentoring programme which supports them as individuals to become less reliant on SWAP support and enables them to move forward in career and lifestyle options.
Their core services include – advocacy with government and non government agencies, budgeting one to one, counselling and courses (parenting and budgeting) a weekly soup lunch with guest speakers, and a very well utilised recycled clothing room. Free computer and internet use, plus a well loved library that offers books regarding life skills and parenting.
