Chrome shortcut keys

This page provides a list of shortcuts you can use in the Chrome browser and with the ChromeVox screen reader.

General shortcuts

Use these shortcuts to move to different tabs and windows. You won't need to have ChromeVox open to use these.

Open a new window Ctrl and N
Open a new tab Ctrl and T
Open a file in the browser Ctrl and O
Close the current tab Ctrl and W
Close the current window Shift and Ctrl and W
Reopen the las tab or window you closed Shift and Ctrl and T
Go to the last tab in the window Ctrl and 9
Go to the next tab in the window Ctrl and Tab
Go to the previous tab in the window Ctrl and Shift and Tab
Go to the previous page in your browsing history Alt and Left arrow then Left arrow
Go to the next page in your browsing history Alt and Right arrow then Right arrow

Open ChromeVox

ChromeVox is a screen reader which you can use if you have difficulty reading a computer screen. You'll need to use headphones.

You can open ChromeVox by pressing Ctrl and Alt and Z.

Choose text with your cursor

  1. To open your ChromeVox options, press Windows and O and then O.
  2. Turn on Speak text under the mouse.
  3. Hover your cursor over text and objects to hear them read aloud.

Move to different cells in a table

You can move around tables using keyboard shortcuts. To start, make sure your cursor is in the table.

To move your cursor from its current location in a table press Windows and Control and Alt and the arrow keys to move one cell up and down and left or right.

To go to different cells use the shortcuts below.

First cell in the table Windows and Alt and Shift and Left arrow
Last cell in the table Windows and Alt and Shift and Right arrow
First cell in current row Windows and Alt and Shift and Ctrl and Left arrow
Last cell in the current row Windows and Alt and Shift and Ctrl and Right arrow
First cell in the current column Windows and Alt and Shift and Ctrl and Up arrow
Last cell in the current column Windows and Alt and Shift and Ctrl and Down arrow

Select text Windows and S. At the end of your selection press Windows and S again

Get information about a page

Action Shortcut
Hear the title of the current page Windows and A then W
Hear the URL or the current page Windows and A then U
Hear the current date time Windows and A then D

Change language

  1. Press and hold Windows then press the letter O twice.
  2. In the Voices section select Chrome OS
  3. Your default language shows on the button label.
  4. Choose another language from the list. You will hear the new language you have selected.
  5. When you are done press Control and W.

Slow down, speed up, or stop spoken feedback

Slow down Windows and Shift and Left square bracket
Speed it up Windows and Left square bracket
Stop speaking Ctrl

Change pitch of the ChromeVox voice

Higher frequency Windows and Right square bracket
Lower frequency Windows and Shift and Right square bracket

Use the ChromeVox menu

To open the ChromeVox menu press Windows and period (full stop).

You can press the left or right arrow to switch between the menus.

To open a specific item from a list press the up or down arrow and then press Enter.

Turn on Learn Mode to hear the names of the keys on your keyboard

Press Windows and O then K. Your keyboard will say the name of any key or key combination you press and explain what the keyboard shortcut does.
