Obligations for parents and caregivers with dependent children
As a parent or caregiver on a benefit with dependent children, you have obligations (Social Obligations) you need to know about and must do for your children. Many of you will already meet or be taking steps to meet these obligations. We can work with you if you need support in any of these areas.
What you need to do
Depending on the age of your child, you need to take reasonable steps to make sure your children are:
- enrolled in and attending an approved early childhood education programme from the age of 3, until they start school
- enrolled in and attending school, starting from age 5 or 6 years
- enrolled with a General Practitioner (GP) or with a medical centre that belongs to a Primary Health Organisation (PHO)
- up to date with core Well Child/Tamariki Ora checks until they turn 5 years old.
