A summary of the process for applying for NZ Super.


The date you first contact us about applying for NZ Super is important.

What you need to do

  • Contact us.
  • Complete an application form.
  • Provide us with the correct documents.
  • Talk to us if you need to.
  • Contact us

    It's important you contact us before you turn 65.

    • Contact us before your 65th birthday so you don't miss out on payments.
    • If you can, contact us 3-4 weeks before your birthday.
    • If you contact us after you turn 65, we cannot backdate your payments to your 65th birthday.
    • If you are 65 or over, and you think you might be able to get NZ Super, contact us as soon as possible.

    How to contact us

    Choose one of the following options:

    • Complete and then submit your application form online.
    • Call us to request a paper application

    If you need to talk to us, you can also book a phone appointment using MyMSD.

    If you can't use our online system, call us.

  • The documents you'll need

    You'll need to provide us with a few documents when you apply for NZ Super. If you're applying online you can upload these to MyMSD while completing your application.

    Tax code

    When you apply for New Zealand Superannuation you'll need to choose the tax code you want to use for your payments. If you need help choosing your tax code, please contact:

    • Inland Revenue: 0800 227 774 (have your IRD number handy).

  • Phone appointments

    If you've applied online and been told you need to make a phone appointment it won't take more than 30 minutes unless:

    • you need to apply for additional help, such as housing or health related costs.
