Help with somewhere to stay after the 14 November 2016 earthquake
After the earthquake, you may need help to find somewhere to stay. We can help in different ways depending on how long after the event you need our help.
Currently only applies to people who were living in Hurunui, Kaikoura and Marlborough (eg Seddon and Ward)
First 10 days after emergency
If you need immediate assistance with shelter and accommodation, this is provided by Civil Defence and Emergency Management (CDEM) for people from Hurinui, Kaikoura, and Marlborough (such as Seddon and Ward) who were evacuated/away from home and unable to get back. Assistance is coordinated by CDEM staff in local Recovery Assistance Centres, and generally lasts for up to two weeks (but can be for longer).
After the initial emergency
Assistance is available if you live in Hurunui, Kaikoura and parts of Marlborough affected by the earthquake and:
- you needed to leave your home because of the earthquake, or were away from your home at the time of the quake and were unable to return home because of the earthquake and
- you don’t have insurance to cover the costs of your immediate needs.
Help with finding temporary accommodation
If you own your home or are in rented accommodation, the Earthquake Temporary Accommodation Service (ETAS) can help if your home can’t be lived in, or if you need help finding suitable rental accommodation while your house is being repaired.
If you need help to find temporary housing you can:
- apply online from the Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment (MBIE) website
- call the Earthquake Temporary Accommodation Service on 0800 673 227
if you’re not able to access the online form. The line operates from Monday to Friday 8am – 5pm. An assessment will be done with you over the phone, and information will be provided to MBIE on your behalf
- come into a Recovery Assistance Centre or a Work and Income service centre to apply for assistance.
After you apply, MBIE will contact you within 48 hours to help you find somewhere suitable to live. Once you’ve found a place to stay, if you need help to pay for your accommodation, you can contact ETAS who will check if you’re eligible for a Civil Defence payment. If you have insurance cover, you’ll need to use this option first before applying for a Civil Defence payment.
Please note: You’re not able to get help with your accommodation costs if an alternative offer for free accommodation is available, or if you’re able to return to your home but choose not to.
If you’re a Housing New Zealand tenant, you should contact HNZC directly for help if needed on 0800 801 601.
