Introduction

The Bonded Merit Scholarship was introduced in 2006. It is designed to recognise and reward New Zealand's most academically capable students, and to provide them with an additional incentive to remain in New Zealand after they have completed their study.

It will help to pay compulsory fees by paying up to $3000 of the course fees per year, for up to 4 years, (or a maximum of $12,000 if approved limited full-time status under illness or disability) from the second year of their first Bachelor's Degree. The student needs to complete the first year of their degree at their own cost.

From 2009 there will be 1500 scholarships available to be awarded.

A student who is in their second year of a bachelor degree may be eligible. They need to have completed their first year of study, full time or approved limited full-time, in 2008 (or 2007 in special circumstances).

Students awarded the Scholarship must agree to certain terms and conditions, including signing a binding Scholarship Agreement and being bonded to remain in New Zealand for a period after they complete their degree(s).

Note because of the limited number of Scholarships available, it may be that not all applicants will be awarded a Scholarship.
