What to bring when you apply for a Special Needs Grant (eg food grant)
Details of the documents you need to bring to your appointment to support your application for a Special Needs Grant (eg food grant).
You must bring original documents or certified true copies. These will be returned to you once we’ve scanned and saved them.

- if there’s anything on the list you’re not sure about, don’t have or will have some delay in providing.
Identification
If you're currently receiving on-going financial assistance
- 1 form of identification
eg passport, driver licence, student id, community services card
Information relating to the urgent need
To process your application and determine your eligibility and entitlement, we need to see information relating to your urgent need:
- a quote from a reputable retailer for the goods or services you need (not required for food or petrol) and/or
- receipts to show where your benefit/income has been spent

your tenancy agreement and a letter stating when the bond needs to be paid by, unless your tenancy is with HNZC then they will send this information to us for you |
| power disconnection | letter from power company or if you’ve been told over the phone about your disconnection, tell the power company to fax the disconnection notice to your case manager or service centre you usually go to |
| car repairs | a quote, proof of car ownership, your driver’s licence and proof that your car is needed for medical, work, or lack of public transport reasons |
If you're not receiving on-going financial assistance
Please bring information relating to the urgent need and the following:

identification
Born in New Zealand - one form of government-issued documentation stating your full legal name and date of birth eg birth certificate, passport, driver licence, firearms licence, deed poll
Born overseas - proof of your lawful residence in New Zealand eg New Zealand passport, other country passport with residence class visa or residence permit, citizenship certificate
or
Two documents supporting your identity eg marriage certificate, bank statement, phone or power account bill, driver licence
- verification of your income eg. payslips
- verification of your assets eg bank statement
and if applicable:
- proof of any of your assets that can earn income
- details of your business income or trusts (if self-employed)
If you have a spouse/partner
You must bring the same information about them.
