What to provide when you apply for New Zealand Superannuation
Details of the documents you need to provide if you’re 65 years or older applying for NZ Super and additional financial assistance.
You must provide us with original documents or certified true copies. These will be returned to you once we’ve scanned and saved them to your record.
A list of what you need to provide can also be found on the Next Steps page after you submit an online application for NZ Super.
Contact us if there’s anything on the list you’re not sure about, don’t have or will have some delay in providing.
Identification
You must bring three forms of identification and one of these must be at least two years old.

Born in New Zealand - one form of government-issued documentation stating your full legal name and date of birth eg birth certificate, passport, driver licence, firearms licence, deed poll
Born overseas - proof of your lawful residence in New Zealand eg New Zealand passport, other country passport with residence class visa or residence permit, citizenship certificate
and

Two documents supporting your identity eg marriage certificate, bank statement, phone or power account bill, driver licence
Supporting documents
To process your application, it’s important that you provide the following:
- proof of your bank account details eg a bank statement with your account number
and if applicable:
- proof of any name change eg deed poll or marriage or civil union certificate
- details of any overseas pension that you may be receiving or entitled to receive

If you’re applying for additional financial assistance
In addition to NZ Super, you may also apply for additional financial assistance to help with your housing and living costs.
You’ll need to provide the following (if it applies):
- proof of any income you receive eg business income, interest, wages
- trust documents eg trust deed
- proof of any assets that could earn income
- proof of accommodation costs eg tenancy agreement
- proof or quotes for any expenses relating to your disability
(to be completed by your doctor or specialist if you have disability related expenses)
If you have a spouse/partner
You must provide your spouse/partner's:
- identification
- proof of any name change they have had eg deed poll or marriage or civil union certificate
- details of any overseas pension that they may be receiving or entitled to receive.
If you’re including your spouse/partner in your superannuation payments
They'll need to complete the:

- proof of their bank account details eg a bank statement with their account number
- proof of both your income details.
