Information for parents/caregivers of applicants for Independent Youth Benefit or Unsupported Child Benefit
Independent Youth Benefit
When we receive an application for an Independent Youth Benefit we usually discuss the situation with parents or caregivers. This allows us to get a full picture of the young person’s situation and try to ensure that all avenues are explored to resolve any issues before any benefit is granted.
There are some circumstances when this won't happen, for example, if they are married.
Unsupported Child’s Benefit
When an application is received for Unsupported Child Benefit for a child that you are the parent of, we will invite you to discuss the situation with us. This allows us to get a full picture of the child’s situation and try to ensure that all avenues are explored to resolve any issues before any benefit is granted.
There are some circumstances where this won’t happen, for example, when a recent Child, Youth and Family Group Conference has been held.
