Things are changing
From 27 September 2010 more people on benefits will need to start looking for work.
Understanding the new changes
If you’re …
- a sole parent whose youngest child is six or older: you’ll need to look for part-time work. We’ll help you find suitable jobs that fit your role as a parent and may be able to help with after school care if you need it
- unemployed: you’ll need to reapply for Unemployment Benefit every 12 months. A case manager will work with you on a comprehensive work assessment to determine what you can do and how we can help you find suitable work
- not working at the moment because you’re sick: we’ll look at what you can do. From May 2011, if you’re assessed as being capable of working at least 15 hours a week, you’ll be expected to look for a suitable part-time job
- on Invalid’s Benefit: there are no changes to the eligibility
- applying for Hardship Assistance: we’ll talk to you more about how to manage your money.
Important points to note
Your benefit will not be cut if you can’t find a job. But you do need to be actively looking for work and sanctions may apply if you don’t.
We’re increasing the amount people on some benefits can earn before their payments are effected.
We’ll carry on supporting you on Invalid’s Benefit if you have a permanent and severe sickness, injury or disability that prevents you from working.
We recognise that parenting is an important role. We’ll help sole parents whose youngest child is six or older find work that fits around their children’s needs. We’re also providing $500 loans to some sole parents to help them study.
