Taking your payments overseas

From 5 January 2010 there are changes to getting your New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran’s Pension when going overseas.

There are changes to the rules for getting your New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran’s Pension while travelling or residing overseas

These changes mean more flexibility for those who would like to travel or reside overseas and keep their entitlement to New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran’s Pension.

You may take an extended overseas trip or reside in any other country in the world and still get up to 100% of your payments.

What you get paid and what rules apply will depend on which country you go to and whether you plan to travel or reside overseas.

There are specific rules that apply to each of the following situations:

Going overseas rules

* New Zealand currently has social security agreements with Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey, the Netherlands, Canada, Greece and Denmark.

** From 5 January 2010

You may get up to 100% of your payments and reside in

  • one of the countries New Zealand has a social security agreement with, or
  • one of 22 Pacific countries covered by The New Zealand Special Portability Arrangement, or
  • any other country in the world.

You can also travel overseas

  • up to 26 weeks without it affecting your payments, or
  • longer than 26 weeks and get up to 100% Of your payments. You need to contact us before you leave.
