Limited Service Volunteer (LSV)
LSV is a six-week motivational course run by the New Zealand Defence Force. It aims to increase the number of young people entering employment or training by improving their self-discipline, self confidence, motivation and initiative.
What you do on the course
LSV motivational training includes outdoor recreational activities that promote team work, self confidence and self achievement. There is a strong emphasis on discipline and complying with service laws, customs and regulations. The training takes place in a military setting and uses military facilities. It’s based at Burnham Military Camp near Christchurch.
Training includes:
- outdoor and physical fitness training
- group dynamics/leadership tasks
- communication skills
- general health instruction
- safety and hygiene instruction
- basic financial and budgetary skills
- instruction in basic job search
- work on personal presentation.
What you learn
As you complete challenging physical activities you will:
- gain new skills to improve your job prospects
- increase your confidence
- meet people, and make new friends.
You'll also receive certificates and references outlining your new skills.
Who can go on the course
LSV is for young people aged from 17 to 25 years old. You don’t have to be getting a benefit from us.
You must be:
- actively engaged with us in looking or preparing for work
- in good health and physically able to complete intensive outdoor activities
- able to meet the minimum New Zealand Defence Force security requirements.
Applicants under 18 years
LSV will consider applications from 17 year old clients on a case by case basis. If you’re younger than 17 you can’t apply.
How much does it cost
The course is free but you’ll need some money to meet the cost of basic items, such as toiletries etc. The New Zealand Defence Force in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development will also cover the costs of getting you there and back home again.
