We may be able to visit you

If you like, we may be able to visit you at your workplace to discuss your employment needs.

What we need to know

When you contact us, we will ask for:

  • details about your vacancy and the kind of person you are looking for
  • information about your business to help us identify your staff requirements
  • an idea of how many applicants you would like to see for each position (we recommend three or four).

Creating a good job description

A good job description will give you a better chance of finding the right person for the role.

When creating your job description, please outline:

  • the job and what it involves
  • the equipment that’s used
  • any special conditions of employment
  • the sort of person you’re looking for
  • the attitude, skills, qualifications and experience they need
  • what skills are essential and what skills are desirable
  • the rate of pay and hours of work.

When you're thinking about who you want for this job, take into account the skills that the person has, not just their previous experience. This will make it easier to find the right person.

Please remember that you can't advertise or discriminate on the grounds of gender, age, race, disability, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, employment status or family status.

Filling a job opening

Once your vacancy has been listed, we'll:

  • start searching our database for suitable people
  • give you an indication of how long the job search is likely to take
  • keep you up to date on the progress of our search and check that your requirements haven't changed
  • arrange interview times to suit you.

You conduct the interviews and decide who you want to hire. You don't have to hire anyone if you don't want to.

Your responsibilities

Appointing someone

When you hire someone you need to negotiate the terms and conditions of the job with that person. Please let us know when you've made your decision, after you have informed the successful and unsuccessful applicants.

Reference checks

You should check that references and qualifications supplied by applicants are correct and that licences are current. You should also make any security checks that your business requires when recruiting staff.

Storing information

A curriculum vitae (CV) is confidential and should be stored or disposed of securely. You can only give a job applicant's CV to someone else with the job applicant's permission.

If you have any questions in this area, please contact the Privacy Commissioner.

Employment contracts

Once the successful candidate has accepted the job offer, you need to draw up an employment contract.
