Recruitment

Our free recruitment service is ideal for employers with immediate recruitment needs. Our service can match your vacancy to a wide selection of job seekers either through our dedicated Employer Line or directly with local work brokerage staff. You don’t have to use our service exclusively, and if your vacancies are managed nationally, we can work with your national HR department to fill vacancies.

Job for a Local with Training subsidy

Job for a Local with Training is a wage subsidy designed specifically for employers to take on unemployed job seekers in the Canterbury region who are registered with Work and Income. Employers who meet the eligibility criteria can receive two lump-sum payments for each eligible Canterbury job seeker they employ. Payments will be made as follows:

  • $3,000 when the job seeker(s) start work
  • $2,000 on the completion of 26 weeks' continuous employment.

The expected outcome of the Job for a Local with Training position is that it continues when the subsidy ends.

Industry Partnerships

Industry Partnerships is a way for Work and Income to work with large employers and industries to help minimise skill and labour shortages and maximise employment opportunities for job seekers.

Work and Income works closely with each partner to learn about their workforce needs, recruitment and planning needs and helps develop programmes and services to meet their specific requirements. These services include:

  • assistance recruiting employees
  • developing training to give job seekers entry level skills to start work in the industry.

Straight to Work

Work and Income provides funding for pre-employment training programmes (with training providers) or in-work training (with employers) to assist large employers and industries where there are skill and labour shortages. Straight to Work training programmes developed with industry partners for people to gain skills tailored specifically to industry sector requirements. This means that the training provided is relevant to the needs of the employers within that industry.

  • Cadetmax
Work and Income provides Cadetmax funding up to $7,100 per person to employers who provide employment opportunities for youth. Cadetmax takes a demand-led approach, with the needs of employers providing the starting point for the initiative’s design and development. The programmes are designed by industry for industry, to take a young person straight to work and support them into an apprenticeship or higher trade training.
  • Jobs with a Future
Jobs with a Future is a programme that enables Work and Income to help employers with funding up to $5,300 to increase productivity by upskilling employees. As employers work with Work and Income to fill vacancies, sometimes a skill gap becomes apparent. That's when Jobs with a Future can be used to help build a more resilient and productive workforce.
  • Job Ops with training
(part of the Youth Opportunities package) - a lump sum subsidy for six months available to all employers to provide an employment opportunity to a young person with low or no skills or work experience. The first payment of $3,000 is paid at the start of the six-month period, and a further $2,000 is paid after six months of the Job Ops position.

Skills Investment Subsidy

a subsidy of up to $380.00 (including GST) per participant, per week, can be paid for up to 52 weeks, as long as the subsidy is kept within the annual maximum of $16,900. We subsidise a worker for a year, and work with you to get the person up to speed in their job. That way, you’ll have a skilled employee after the subsidy ends.

Skills for Growth

Employers can receive $5,000 to contribute towards the costs of investment in training for a new permanent employee aged 16 to 24 years. The employer must commit to supporting the young person to achieve a Level 2 qualification (or higher) on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework, relating to the industry they are employed in. Support provided by the employer includes meeting the costs of the training, for example, fees and stationery.

Mainstream Employment Programme

A two-year subsidy available to State sector employers who can offer a created position to a person with a significant disability. The subsidy is for 100% of the salary for one year and 80% for the second year, with additional subsidies for training and equipment.

Earthquake Support Subsidy

The Earthquake Support Subsidy was a short-term measure to help businesses get through the first weeks after the earthquake. It is no longer available.
