Job for a Local with Training in Canterbury
Job for a Local with Training in Canterbury is a short-term programme to encourage employers to take on staff. It provides a wage subsidy for employers who take on disadvantaged Canterbury job seekers.
Who can get it?
Generally all employers will be eligible; however, the job must:
- be a permanent position
- be a full-time position of 30 hours per week or more
- have an hourly rate equal to or higher than the adult minimum wage
- be located within the Canterbury Region.
An employer can receive a Job for a Local with Training in Canterbury subsidy for up to 10 people provided each position meets the criteria above.
Which job seekers will qualify for it?
To be eligible for the Job for a Local with Training in Canterbury subsidy, job seekers must be:
- a New Zealand Citizen or permanent resident
- unemployed but not necessarily receiving a benefit
- aged 18 to 64 years
- struggling to find work and at risk of long-term unemployment
- living in the Canterbury region.
Payments
From 25 July 2011 employers will receive $3,000 when the employee starts work, and will receive a further $2,000 when the person has been in continuous employment for six months.
How does it work?
Our Canterbury Work Brokers will identify with employers any vacancies that meet the criteria for Job for a Local. We'll then refer eligible job seekers who are suitable for the position for consideration by the employer.
What happens if a Job for a Local participant finishes early
If a person finishes a Job for a Local with Training in Canterbury position before the 26-week subsidy period is up, the employer must advise us. We'll calculate the employer subsidy entitlement based on the number of weeks the person has worked.
