$3k to Christchurch
$3k to Christchurch is a one-off incentive payment of $3,000 for Work and Income beneficiaries (or people who have applied and are eligible for a work-tested benefit) to help them relocate to the Christchurch area to take up full-time work.
The payment is being made available to help relieve the labour shortage in Canterbury brought about by increasing rebuild activities.
How does it work?
Once a person has a confirmed job offer from an employer, they apply to Work and Income for the payment. Provided everything is in order, the payment will be made direct to the client.
Is my business included in the $3k initiative?
Almost any business operating in the Canterbury area is included. The job must be for 30 hours a week or more, be permanent, or a fixed term for more than 91 days, and it must be based in the Christchurch area. The Christchurch area refers to the areas covered by the Ashburton, Hurunui, Selwyn, and Waimakariri District Councils and the Christchurch City Council.
What other support is available for people who move to Christchurch on the $3k incentive?
Beneficiaries will still be able to receive our normal financial and in-work support such as Job Streams and Transition to Work grants (except for relocation costs) if they are eligible.
In addition, Work and Income will provide follow-up support for people who have received the $3k to Christchurch payment.

Work and Income can assist by providing video conferencing facilities, short video CVs, or, if you’re able to travel, arranging for a group of job seekers to meet an employer in one face-to-face session.
