After 15 years of being on a benefit, Marian built on her skills to move into a new career. She now has a new perspective on life and says to herself and others "Why didn't I do this years ago?"
Maurice's mid-forties career change led him to discover a passion for helping older people. “I never took much notice of older people before this. I thought they were all deaf and losing their marbles.”
Priscilla has returned to the workforce and is investing in her career. “All of a sudden it was about me. I had been a good mother to my children and investing in my career now makes it an even brighter future for my children in the long run.”
Instead of getting into trouble, Ian and Pera decided to get into shape. With the help of their employer and coach Paul Scutt they're now picking up skills on and off the field.
Mercer, a teen mother, found it tough to support herself and her daughter on the DPB. She was keen to work and saw an opportunity to take part in a local Straight to Work programme. Now she has a job she enjoys and enough money to save for her wedding.
Olivia had to find a career path that fitted in with caring for her son. After completing a Certificate in Community Support Services, her new job in the healthcare industry provides that and more. “For the first time in my life I wake up looking forward to going to work.”
Daniel, who for a long time was on benefits due to illness, is now helping others as a Case Manager with Work and Income. He is enjoying making a difference in others lives.
Maree and Josie are both active in their community and age does not hold them back. They ensure that there’s always someone to talk to and support is always available to older people in their area.
