How we can support employers and staff affected by the Rena grounding

Oil from the grounded container ship Rena has contaminated a large area of sea and coastline in the Bay of Plenty area. Tides and changing winds are spreading the oil both east and west of Tauranga and this is affecting some industries. If you have been affected in some way, we may be able to help.

Support Services

We provide support services to businesses and their staff when they’re faced with sudden change, such as reduction or loss of business. We can work with employers to identify options for retaining staff during temporary periods of no employment or helping staff find suitable jobs in the event the business is forced to close.

Help for people not eligible to receive a main benefit

Some workers may not qualify for a main benefit (such as unemployment benefit) because their partner is working. However, families on a low income may be eligible for some extra help or Working for Families through Inland Revenue.
